Verb-to-be ‘am / is / are / was / were’ are to show the state of being.
They are followed by a noun, an adjective or an adverb of place.
     I am a pupil.
     I am tall and thin.  
       
     Miss Ting is a clerk.
     She is hardworking.
     She is in the office now.

     Tom was busy yesterday.
     He was here in the morning.                            

     The children were noisy just now.    
     They were in the classroom.
